“Angel-A is a stylish and memorable treat for the eyes”

Angel – A (2005)

Director: Luc Besson

Cast:

Andre - Jamel Debbouze
Angela – Rie Rasmussen

Genre: Comedy, fantasy, romance.

Directed by Luc Besson, (a strong French accent is recommended, for effect) Angel – A is a story about Andre Moussa, a single 28 year old whose compulsive lying and borrowing dirty money has got himself into a hole so deep, suicide is his only way out. That is until a beautiful stranger, (Angela) offers to help Andre out of his financial troubles and opens his eyes to the true beauty of life and living.

The viewer is immediately immersed into the mood of the film; the black and white framing creates the feeling of hopelessness and desperation for the protagonist Andre (Jamel Debbouze) whose role is performed excellently. The viewer is left feeling his frustration and confusion in himself, (something all of us can relate to). As for Angela, (Rie Rasmussen) her performance mirrors that of Debbouze; her on-screen appearance is simply beautiful, clearly there was chemistry between the two leads and this is evident throughout the film.

It has been a while since a film has made me search myself and question my own morals, yet this simple tale of being honest and true to yourself did just that, even hours after watching the film. Angel-A is a stylish and memorable treat for the eyes, and the fact that the film is subtitled is instantly overlooked within the opening scene. Highly recommended to anyone who has a soul.
